Then I read the rest of the tutorial, including the part of saving as anything but jpg. So I saved it as PSD, opened it there and looked for an alpha channel. No joy.

I also learned that I can apply materials to lights. This sounded like fun, so I applied a clouds texture to the Intensity of the backfill light, turned on the fill light changed the color to 255/85/85, and Firefly rendered as PSD (file size: 1.16 MB), opened it in PSCS3, saved for web (file size: 9KB).
