Over there, on the right: That's me. Out there, looking at the monitor: That's you.

This is the way it is right now. I'm writing, you're reading. That's right now.

This will, I hope, change. I hope that by this time next week, I'll be doing a lot more reading than writing. Reading about how you did all the amazing things that you'll be showing off. Looking at all the new tricks Janee has taught us over the weekend. Stealing your ideas! <Insert evil laugh here.>

But right now, I'm writing and you're reading. I'm George. I live in a house I like to call The Woods. You'll probably get to see pictures of it. The Woods is located in Nassau, NY, which is about halfway between Albany, NY, and Pittsfield, MA.

By day — until the end of the month — I'm a Document Conversion Consultant, taking about 1,500 pages of Word text in four volumes, converting them to FrameMaker books, indexing them, and creating a template which can be used for the client's nine other manuals. And training. Training accountants how to use FrameMaker. This is a lot like teaching fish to fly. Fish have many talents; so do accountants. Fish don't fly a lot; accountants don't use publishing tools a lot.

After October 3, the plan is that I'll become the Coordinator of a Group of Technical Writers. This means I get to be the Style Nazi, and say "Dis is how it vill be done!" (Imagine The Governator saying that. Yes, that's the accent I want.) I will also get to devise a number of illustrations, both in Photoshop and Illustrator for the company's publications, marketing materials, etc. I have to become very good at this because my boss is An Artist. Really. Degrees, shows ... all that stuff. She's d--n good, too. She just doesn't use computers a lot. You remember paintbrushes? Yeah, that kind of artist. I, on the other hand, press keys.

By night, I play with Photoshop, Illustrator, Garage Band, talk with friends on LiveJournal (at least one of whom is here), read books, and — when I get tired of all that stuff — press keys. On the instrument in the living room.

As you can see, I'm not a young man. I try not to let that make me boring. But, really, it's for you to say whether I succeed in that attempt.

I've taken a lot of LVSOnline courses, most recently Janee's excellent Starting with a Blank Canvas. I've followed Janee's exploits since I got really bored at work in February 2001 and started following a Usenet group on Photoshop. That took me to her website (Go look. Seriously. Go now. I'll be here when you get back.) Yep, still here. See what I mean. And she's going to be teaching us. I'm excited. I'm not getting a certificate for the course, so I can brown-nose at will without feeling guilty.

See you on the board!
