Lesson 2

Use Spheroid Designer to create an image using any of the presets in KPT. Also make two more without using any of the presets included with KPT.

I have to admit that Spheroid Designer was one of my least favorite KPT3 filters. I thought:

  • interface was just plain UGLY

  • the controls were unclear, and

  • its uses were obscure.

Well, thanks to the excellent tutorial, I can revise that assessment. The interface is still UGLY and its uses are still obscure, but at least I have some idea of what the controls do and how to use them. Now, all I have to do is spend about five or six hours looking at that UGLY screen and I'll get the thing under control. Now, if I could just think what I'll do with the results.

Use Spheroid Designer to create at least two planets in addition to the one in the tutorial. Combine them into one image or post them individual; tell us what you did to get the ffect and why you like it.

What I did was to play with the packing options in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, then get off-track because I saw something that had some potential to make an interesting pattern. The "what I did and why I like it" are on the other page. By the way, I DID try to play with the Genesis Editor, but it only worked sporadically and I don't really have enough time to play around to see what I'm doing wrong: I've got a network to install this week, that's why I'm doing my homework on Tuesday night, rather than my usual Thursday or Friday.

Use Gradient Designer to make one gradient using a preset included with KPT. Make two more using different blend modes, etc. to create the ffect. Post them, explaining which settings you adjusted.

KPT3's Gradient Designer has long been one of my favorites, although messing about with the gradient bracket seems to be somewhat of an inexact science. Since Photoshop 6 came out with its own gradient editing capabilities, I've been using that because of its more precise method of indicating bracket beginning and end points (you enter numbers into boxes). But it's been fun going back to an old friend.

Use Texture Explorer to create a couple different textures. Play with blend modes and sliders to achieve desired effect.

Applying textures in several different ways.

Use gradient designer to create a sun; use other tools/filters to create things to add to your scene. Do NOT use anything other than KPT3 to make the scene.

A few more textures here, joined together with a gradient and a perspective to make a scene.

Use images in zip files and/or your own to create digital painting using the pixel f/x filter. Apply the Intensity filter to three images. Use at least one "washed out" photo of your own.
